Death of the Big Two

In my hand I hold the last issues of each magazine, the July-August 2019 issue of Motorcyclist and issue #4 of Cycle World printed in fall of 2020. Both magazines stopped their presses then but continued to exist online until this past July,when their owners at Octane Lending shut down Cycle World and Motorcyclist completely, along with Dirt Rider, Motorcycle Cruiser and other ATV, UTV and electric bike publications. Advertising dollars that shifted away from print and killed their paper publications continued their shift and pulled away from their websites, making them no longer viable.

The Death of Print

With great sadness I hold in my hand the last print issue of Cycle World. The brainchild of Joe Parkhust started publication in 1962 but ceased printing of magazines in 2020 as they transitioned to online media only. As the print version died, so did my dream of ever seeing my name in an issue of Cycle World…

My Brother’s Keeper

Motorcyclists have some unwritten codes, which we all (mostly) abide by, such as “the wave”, riding staggered with each other, among others. Notably, most motorcyclists also follow the rule, “never leave a fellow rider stranded.” This is regardless of brand or type of bike. I’ve been on the giving and receiving end of this “biker good will”, and it’s one of the many reasons I love the motorcycling community.
