Unleashing the Beast Within
I don’t believe I’ve ever met anyone who wants to keep their Harley-Davidson motorcycle stock. Even before your new pride and joy rolls off the showroom floor, shiny ideas and images of style and performance changes rumble into your motoring mind. Louder and less restrictive exhaust pipes are usually the first thing, closely followed by an air cleaner that lets the motor breathe more oxygen. All in endless pursuit of fun and coolness.
The test mule: my 2012 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic.
These enhancements are offered in stages. Stage I includes a high-flow air cleaner, and better breathing and deeper sound slip-on or full exhaust systems. When tuned correctly, you can expect about a 10% power gain. If you skip the tuning part, your bike will run leaner and hotter, may backfire and run rougher. Not great long term.
Stage II involves, of course, more work and money. Just the price to pay for more mid-range oomph. You’ll bolt on a new cam and upgraded tappets and pushrods. ECM recalibration (tuning) is needed to match the new cam.
Stage III brings you to a big bore kit. If you want more pulling power you need a bigger motor. High compression pistons to help the mid-to-high range power curve. Each stage will work better if everything from the previous stage is included.
If this doesn’t get you there, Stage IV is the full top-end build. It adds ported and polished larger valve heads; a larger throttle body, both designed for max air flow; and more aggressive cams and pistons to boost power at the high end. So Stage IV has it all, and once dialed in correctly by your handy tuner, you’re ready to scare women and children, and maybe yourself.

For my purposes Stage I is good, for now, and what the Screamin’ Eagle Tuner is made for. I wanted to wake up the motor a little, not that my 2012 Road King Classic really needed any nudging. The larger target was sound. I wanted the 103 cubic-inch Twin Cam to have that deep, throaty rumble I’ve grown to not so much want, but need, like a drug. I don’t know if anything I do will make this ride sound like my ’99 Evo or ’83 drag-piped Shovel, but I sure wanted to give it a bash. On went some pipes and a new cleaner, then off to the Harley shop to make it all work.
According to an H-D spokesman, the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Performance Tuner “…is designed to simplify management of engine operating parameters as performance modifications are made…the kit allows you to adjust key parameters or simply upload the latest Engine Control Module (ECM) calibrations to match your bike’s state-of-tune.” Once used, the tuner is permanently married to your bike and cannot be used with another motorcycle. Keep the unit in its box, in your desk, nice and cozy.

The Pro Street Tuner features a guided process to enable quick navigation through the software and permits optimum performance without compromising fuel efficiency, emission levels, engine durability, or 50-State U.S. EPA compliance, according to the spokesman, adding:
- Stores up to 15 minutes of run-time data that can be downloaded, allowing evaluation of the bike’s air/fuel ratio, O2 sensor readings, engine speed and temperature, as well as RPM and vehicle speed, throttle position, spark advance, among other measures.
- Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) will record and display service codes for troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Engine data is tracked by running the bike through a range of RPM and throttle positions, reduces time to modify existing Volumetric Efficiency tables (works on models with factory-installed O2 sensors only)
- Adjustability to spark advance, throttle progression, and volumetric efficiency to dial in fuel needs.
- Includes the Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) module and unlimited access to the latest software updates.
You can use the tuner yourself with help from Harley’s internet-based training guides, if needed. If you go this route, you’ll need to purchase the Screamin’ Eagle Tuner Cable Kit, which is sold separately. Or you can do what I did and take your ride down to the local Harley dealer. No cable kit needed.
After the install, my Road King runs as smooth as ever, has a bit more go and that soul soothing rumble I so degenerately need, or at least closer to it. Still…want…it…louder. Loud pipes save lives, right? I need help.
