To Give Is To Gain
by Rob Brooks | Dec 5, 2022 | Ride Life, Rides & Roads | 4 |
Motorcyclists are a generous lot, giving of our time, talents and resources to worthy causes, year-round. During the Christmas season, however, “Biker Goodwill” ramps up even more, with charity rides and events dotting the landscape and nearly every day until the new year. We especially love children’s causes, whether it be for underprivileged boys and girls, kids with severe illnesses, or recent loss and orphaned children. Those definitely tug at our heartstrings. Beneath the leather and loud pipes, we are softies for serving those in need around us.

In the 1970s, Indy car racer Wally Dallenbach took his winnings from the California 500 and bought a ranch near the Fryingpan River in Colorado. In 1975 he explored the mountains and mining ghost towns around his ranch on his motorcycle with his son Wally Jr. and friend Sherm Cooper. They loved the trails so much that the next year they invited friends Dick Singer, Art Lamey, Lon Bromley, Del Garnder, Ed Kretz, Al Unser and Bobby Unser. That first ride in 1976 needed a name and being Indy 500 veterans, the group named it the Colorado 500.

We’ve long held a special place in our hearts for the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. This worldwide benefit ride for men’s prostate cancer and mental health strikes close to home for several of us here at Road Dirt who have dealt with cancer and/or various forms of depression, either personally or with a loved one. So after two years of social distancing and solo riding, we were thrilled to see the event returning to its original form of riders across globe gathering together to ride for the cause in their “dapper best” astride vintage, classic and modern classic motorcycles.

As motorcycle riders, we relish any opportunity to hit the open roads and throttle out into the wind. Sharing the road and the ride with friends and like-minded bikers makes it even better. But when we can ride for a worthy cause, when our motorcycles are vehicles for genuine change, that can be the most rewarding ride of all. The “Why We Ride to the Quail” is just such a motorcycle ride.

Fabrizio is living the dream. Literally.
Fabrizio Uberti-Bona came to America in 1999, with as he states it, “$300 and a dream.” He’s fulfilling that dream, every day. A husband and father, successful businessman, living in the sunshine of Gulf coastal Florida, Fabrizio has also ridden around and across the continental United States via motorcycle, seeing wonders and meeting people many of us born here have yet to enjoy ourselves.
We first discovered Fabrizio‘s unique story through one of our contacts at Triumph North America. Gina from Triumph emailed me saying, “We’ve met a guy from Italy living here now, with a pretty cool story about riding a Rocket 3R across the American west, and thought you might be interested.” We were indeed, and reached out to Fabrizio to connect with him. And what a story we found.
