Phil’s Op-Ed: Breaking Down Barriers to the Ride Life
by Phil Gauthier | Aug 26, 2025 | Ride Life | 0 |
At Road Dirt we talk, write about and live the “Ride Life”. It’s more than a slogan, it’s a way of life for us. We believe riding unencumbered by seatbelts & cages lets the soul truly experience travel in a special way. We love sharing how beautiful riding a motorcycle can be by soaking in the sun and wind and aromas you just can’t experience in a car (cage for those in the know). We hope that our stories will motivate people, young and old, to consider buying a motorbike and joining the riding community to experience the joys we all do on two.

Turning right onto a state road near my home, I suddenly caught a glimpse in my left periphery of a pickup truck topping the hill behind me, his headlights bearing down rapidly in my mirrors. “Oh crap,” I exclaimed, as I rolled hard on the throttle to put distance between us. The Zero DSR/X responded instantly with arm stretching torque, nearly lifting the front with eager acceleration. 0-70 mph in seconds, leaving the four wheeled interloper far behind.

We’ve been following the designs and development of Zero Motorcycles in recent years, and enjoyed our time with a pair of their innovative electric bikes a couple of years ago, the SR/S and the SR/F. We currently are riding their sport adventure offering the DSR/X for a few weeks, for a review we’ll publish soon. Spoiler alert: we’re impressed with it so far.
So when Zero sent us some info and pics of their collaboration with HUGE Design, the SR-X, we were intrigued, to say the least.
IMS Outdoors- The Ultimate Motorcycle Rider Expo?

There are motorcycle industry conventions, motorcycle shows or every style and stripe, regional expos that feature local vendors and dealerships, and then there is the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows Outdoors. Simply stated, there is not another motorcycling showcase event on the planet quite like the IMS Outdoors.
Attendees can literally ride new motorcycles from participating brands all day, bike after bike, one after another, of every type they carry. Name for me another large scale motorcycle event where riders can enjoy that level of accessibility and experience. Nothing else comes to mind for me.
Harley-Davidson Launches LiveWire ONE

The future of motorcycling is coming, and it is electric. Resistance is futile. EVs are here to stay, and nearly every motorcycle brand is working R&D to develop machines for this rapidly emerging segment. We sampled a few last year, Harley’s first LiveWire in early 2020, then the Zero Motorcycles SR/F and SR/S. We came away pleasantly surprised and impressed with all three. The Harley in particular had insane torque, acceleration and speed, and though introduced rather pricey for most tastes, the bike showcased a new direction the legendary brand was willing to venture into.
