Then he heard them, otherworldly giants in the distance screaming their haunting battle cry, filling the silent night air with their spine-chilling roar. Behind the concrete blocks, the fear swept over him as he felt these murderous creatures growing closer, hidden for now by the dark. Fierce, inhuman beings invading his land, destroying everyone and everything in their path, and he alone, with one automatic rifle, the last line of defense before children would be snatched from their beds and families destroyed as these grotesque abominations took over this village.

Trapped in the city of Mykolaiv, Ukraine as the air-strike warnings howled across the city, we made the decision to move to a nearby park. Out in the open we hoped that we would be as far from any buildings as we could if they got hit. And, if they hit the park we’d be gone quickly.

Setting up camp for a few days in our small, single bedroom apartments, Kiran and I debriefed from the day, both sharing the insane feeling of catching ourselves enjoying the ride and forgetting the war for a while. Any feelings of guilt were soon washed away by the haunting and now familiar sound of the sirens howling out into the night, as we sat discussing our day and the strange intimacy that knowing these could be our last moments induced.
