Through The Lens: Laguna Seca Look-Back

Laguna Seca is one of the most famous racetracks in the world. Built in 1957, the fabled track is just over 2 miles in length, with 180 ft of elevation change. Best known for the notorious “Corkscrew” tight turn near the top back of the track, it boasts a blind left crest at Turn 8 immediately followed by a hard right plunge down to Turn 8A in only 450 feet, with a drop of 5.5 stories in elevation. The whole track is insanely challenging, for automobiles and motorcycles alike.

The Thrice Crowned King

Recently at Pittsburgh International Raceway, Yamaha Racing rider Jake Gagne claimed his third consecutive MotoAmerica title in spectacular fashion, the champ winning all three Superbike races across the weekend, a “threepeat to solidify his threepeat.” This, with two more race rounds and four Superbike races left on the schedule. Gagne left no doubt about his dominance and dynasty in the MotoAmerica Superbike class, writing a new page in the AMA Road Racing history books.

Gagne Takes Control At Laguna Seca

For the first time this season, 2021 defending MotoAmerica Superbike champion Jake Gagne leads the points chase after double wins at this weekend’s GEICO Motorcycle Speedfest at Laguna Seca.  The Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha Racing rider did what he does best, clearing off at the start both days, putting down quick and consistent laps and then maintaining his lead to the finish. That’s Gagne’s fourth win in a row and his seventh on the year, and he now leads the championship by three points.

Geoff Nickless is a legend in motorcycle racing photography. Snapping flat track, motocross and road racing since the 1970s, Geoff has captured the greats of the sport, and has a museum-worthy collection of extraordinary photos from the golden age of American motorcycle racing that is unrivaled. He’s shared some of his favorites here before, and when we learned of Wes Cooley’s passing last month, we reached out to Geoff for his favorite Cooley photos over the years. He wholeheartedly obliged.
