Resurrecting A Laverda, Part 1
by Neale Bayly | Jan 13, 2025 | Legendary Bikes, Ride Life | 1 |
In early 1981 I rolled into the town of Colchester on a well-worn Yamaha XT 500, flat broke wearing a leather jacket, a pair of thread bare jeans, and just a bag of clothes on my back. As I pulled over in the high street to get my bearings, it happened. A bright orange Laverda Jota fired up a few hundred yards away, filling the high street with the most blood-curdling roar as the owner blipped the throttle to warm the engine. Watching transfixed as he then climbed on, clicked the snarling beast into gear, before dropping the clutch, and taking off with the most intoxicating cacophony of sound I had ever heard. Winding the big triple up close to red line in first gear before letting off to slow for the traffic light, the noise the big Laverda made on the overrun was as equally stunning as it snorted and backfired in the quiet English afternoon.

I remember the very first IMS show I ever attended. It was in North Atlanta, at a large convention venue called the Cobb Galleria. A bunch of guys and gals in my riding group had taken the bikes on a chilly January morning around the north Atlanta perimeter, to attend the show on a Saturday. We arrived well before the doors ever opened, purchased our tickets, and awaited the grand entrance. When IMS flung the doors open, The visual moto-feast I beheld raised the hair on the back of my neck. Expansive displays of current and coming models from all the major national and international brands, chrome, paint and rubber from one end of the convention floor to the other. Marques lofted their logo banners, rock music wafted over the sound system, young women walked around passing out show packets. I was in motorcycle heaven.

With the announcement back in September that the IMS would retool their annual traveling show to more interactive outdoor events in 2021, our hopes were buoyed that we might get a second glance from the show’s planners. Going outdoors, especially in this age of COVID-19, can be a real boon to the industry and the riding community, with the potential for more manufacturers, more vendors, and more fans to attend. Actual demo rides rather than just straddling new models in a booth space, as well as outdoor concerts, food areas, stunt shows, etc., can give the outdoor concept a new excitement.

As pandemic weeks turn into months and the self-isolation becomes unbearable, Biker Opening Day quickly approaches with engines silent and eyeballs ablaze with visions of the open road and destinations yet traveled. There may be nothing you can legally do with your body more exciting than grabbing your partner and jumping on a motorcycle. No other human experience heightens senses and ignites instincts like climbing atop a great chuffing beast and hurling your body through space.

We love motorcycles. All of them. But we must admit to a soft spot for vintage, those legendary bikes of yesteryear. With that in mind, we plan to occasionally showcase a piece of classic iron that we find particularly compelling. This one comes courtesy of Mecum Auctions, via our friend Bill Braile of POIM (Pics of Interesting Motorcycles). We hope you enjoy this little slice of motorcycle history. Heck, we might have to dedicate a new page to these!
