Ryan Nolan Talks With MotoAmerica Racers Max Flinders and Ben Smith During The Opening Round At Road America
I had the opportunity, along with our fellow photographer Dean Phelps, to attend, shoot, and interview riders during the first race of the 2020 MotoAmerica season, albeit without fans. We’ve planned on following Superbike racer Max Flinders and Supersport racer Benjamin Smith, from preseason through end-of-season, so we made a point of checking in with them both across the weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (my home track).
I interviewed the expressive and enthusiastic Englishman Max Flinders at the end of the weekend, as he reflected on the oddities of racing without fans in the stands, and what he’s looking forward to in the race rounds to come-
I chatted up Supersport racer Ben Smith after each of his races as well. Considering his limited seat time and track days prior to the start of the season, Ben made a great showing of himself in race 1, scoring points with a solid 5th place finish. We then discussed his misfortune in race 2, getting off in the gravel in turn 5 after coming in too hot. He spent the rest of the race trying to get back in the points hunt, finishing 12th overall.
Ben is a champ of a young man, having held the KTM RC Cup Championship back before entering Supersport last year. Here’s our conversations, set together-
Both of these guys are enjoyable to interview, and we look forward to following them as we cover the MotoAmerica race season this year. We’ll catch up with them again when the round 2 returns here to Road America, June 26-28.
Stay tuned to Road Dirt for our race coverage, interviews, photo galleries, and results of each round. As our editor Rob often quips, “Road Dirt loves racing!”
