Why We Ride

Bryan Carroll is a man on a mission. He wants to see childhood brain cancer eliminated in our lifetime. And he’s determined to help make that dream happen. Bryan, the producer and director of the acclaimed 2013 motorcycling film, “Why We Ride”, along with his friend and colleague James Walker, love motorcycling, and love the motorcycle community. And like so many in our community, Bryan and James have big hearts for philanthropy, specifically for children’s causes.

We got thinking about the motorcycle movies several of the Road Dirt guys have mentioned before as film favorites, and thought we’d share them here. They’re not the usual “bad boy” or “biker gang” movies that have been a dime a dozen over the years. These are movies that we feel really capture in some way our collective moto culture. And we love them.

Once again benefitting the Treasured Lives Foundation, established to help end sex trafficking in South Dakota, Why We Ride and MOTOvational Inc. are partnering with them to open a crisis house for those rescued, and provide the means to a fresh start in life. The Sturgis Wrap Party will donate all proceeds to this cause, something many motorcyclists are very passionate about.

“Let’s go rescue Max!” I exclaimed to Rob.
Rob Brooks is Road Dirt’s owner, editor, chief cook and bottle washer and I was in Rob’s living room, having flown from Washington State to his house outside of Atlanta, Georgia to ride Honda’s CB1000R Black Edition and Triumph’s lovely Speed Triple 1200RR. As I fed Rob’s dog Dez copious amounts of cookies under the table, Rob was using social media to track the progress of Max Flinders, MotoAmerica Superbike racer and all around good guy, whose tow rig puked transmission parts, stranding him in Alabama. Rob’s reaction to my suggestion was predictable.

As motorcycle riders, we relish any opportunity to hit the open roads and throttle out into the wind. Sharing the road and the ride with friends and like-minded bikers makes it even better. But when we can ride for a worthy cause, when our motorcycles are vehicles for genuine change, that can be the most rewarding ride of all. The “Why We Ride to the Quail” is just such a motorcycle ride.
