The Shocking Demise of IMS Outdoors
by Rob Brooks | May 11, 2022 | Industry & Racing | 4 |
I got the call while driving out to the Scull Shoals ADV/Dual Sport Ride, a call I’d been expecting but with different content and purpose. Leah with the International Motorcycle Shows Outdoors dialed me up, not to discuss details of our 2nd year partnership with them, but to inform me the shows were all abruptly being cancelled. “We’ve made the difficult decision to suspend all of the 2022 shows,” she informed me, “we just made the decision today.”

When we first learned of the Progressive IMS shifting to an outdoor, demo rides format for 2021, we felt it was a grand idea whose time had fully arrived. After nearly 40 years of a winter convention center display format, the Informa Markets team (organizers of IMS) transitioned to an open-air riding experience last year, with stops in cities across America during the summer and fall, and the results were spectacular.

I’ve followed the work of Robert Pandya for many years, from his writings in various motorcycle magazines, his television and internet appearances advocating for the powersports industry, and have hoped to meet the man in person some day. Back in early 2019, as we were trying to get Road Dirt off the ground, I found Robert on LinkedIn and reached out to connect. He was always responsive, helpful and encouraging, offering tips and insights that we both appreciated and incorporated. We’ve corresponded fairly regularly in the years since, and I’ve always appreciated his friendliness, candor, and honesty in our exchanges.

There are motorcycle industry conventions, motorcycle shows or every style and stripe, regional expos that feature local vendors and dealerships, and then there is the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows Outdoors. Simply stated, there is not another motorcycling showcase event on the planet quite like the IMS Outdoors.
Attendees can literally ride new motorcycles from participating brands all day, bike after bike, one after another, of every type they carry. Name for me another large scale motorcycle event where riders can enjoy that level of accessibility and experience. Nothing else comes to mind for me.

As the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows roll across the country this summer and fall, so too does the J & P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. The custom competition is actually in its 11th year now, but the partnership with IMS Outdoors this year means the show will expand to a nationwide, multi-venue, open-air competition, holding regional bike shows in nine cities as part of the IMS 2021 tour. The UBCBS, as it’s often called, has a rich history as the nation’s largest motorcycle builder competition, featuring hundreds of motorcycles and offering the chance to win tens of thousands in cash and prizes across the 2021 IMS tour this year. The opening round of the “bike build-off” took place at Sonoma Raceway this past weekend, and the bikes taking top prizes were stunning.
