Descending off the high plains of panhandle Texas and into the desert and Mesa’s of New Mexico, the setting sun was splashing a kaleidoscope of color across the sky. Behind us, as darkness crapped over the canopy above, a full moon was rising behind our right shoulders. Mike was riding lead, his silhouette framed by the sinking sun, and I fell into a completely calm state, almost like a trance, and time seemed to stand still.

Looking back over the past 12 months, we decided to compile a short list of our favorite bikes this year. Everything we rode we absolutely enjoyed, but here are a few that we particularly had a blast with. Leave us a comment below on any of these you got to ride or purchase, or any others you may have enjoyed.

As I started my first flying lap, braking into T1 I immediately felt at home, the braking power was strong and predictable and I had a good feel with the front tire as I dove into the turn. The handling was light and flickable just as I remembered from my first ride. Having the power band smoothed out allowed me to keep up my corner speed and get the power down as I exited each corner. After another lap I had clicked off an 1:18 without really pushing, so I knew I had a lot left in the tank. Beginning my next couple of laps I started to catch traffic so slowed up a little and decided to dive into the pit lane to try and get some clear track.

Somewhere in the middle of the design equation for form and function in motorcycling is the fun factor that makes a bike memorable to ride. And thankfully, the 2025 Yamaha Ténéré 700 not only boasts the styling and engineering to make it a practical ADV bike, but it is also a thrill to ride. Whether you’re looking for a capable off-roader or a sensible commuter, the Ténéré 700 checks both of those boxes and more, a feat that few motorcycles on the market today can actually achieve.

Over the summer, we had the opportunity to sample the new Honda CB750 Hornet, and earlier the 2025 Yamaha MT-07. Both of these are fantastic, affordable middleweight naked sportbikes, and we loved them both. We got the bright idea of riding them together, side-by-side and nose-to-tail, since they are comparable in size, displacement and rider triangle. After pitching the idea to Honda, who wholeheartedly jumped at it, Yamaha must have read our twisted minds, and preempted us by calling and offering one once they saw we had the Hornet.
Thus we began the bout.
