Anatomy of a Squid
by Rob Brooks | Sep 7, 2020 | Nuts & Bolts, Ride Life | 2 |
Returning home from town the other day, I was witness to a “squid” couple on a blacked-out, swingarm stretched, and open-piped Yamaha R1. The “pilot” wore shredded, holey blue jeans with white sneakers, a grinning skull bandana covering his face, and a non-DOT spiked “Kaiser” helmet. His passenger, a rather rotund young lady, wore a good full-face helmet (admirable), but tight shorts, a tank top, and sandals (not admirable). It’s Independence Day, a Saturday, and students are in school. But the four students attending summer school were not lackluster performers or behavior problems, nor are they being forced to attend against their will.
Quite the opposite. They paid to come here, some traveling thousands of miles to attend. Even more unusual, the curriculum at this school involves clutch control, lofting the front wheel and monkey lifts. All of them, including the instructor and her support staff, are female.

That last part can be intermittent at best, given how easily distracted I can be.

With a flood of helmets on the market ranging from under $50 to over $1,000, it is tempting to save money by buying a cheap lid. Beginning and veteran riders often ask: What’s the difference? Why do some helmets cost under a hundred bucks and others almost a thousand? Don’t they all have a DOT sticker? Won’t they all protect your head the same?

As 2019 draws to a close, many of us pause to consider the year gone by, with all it’s triumphs and tragedies. We at Road Dirt have glanced back over our shoulders as well, contemplating our first year as a motorcycle publication. And what a year it was.
