We here at Road Dirt absolutely love following the annual Dakar Rally-Raid. It is the most incredible race on the planet. Crossing inhospitable, otherworldly, vast open landscapes, just finishing the grueling odyssey is an achievement in and of itself. From intense heat to freezing nights, dry desert dunes to drenching downpours, those who undertake this grueling contest are another level of courage or crazy.

Dramatic 2023 Supercross Season Opener

Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac took a wild and hard-fought victory at the opening round of the 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season, an event that also paid points as the opening round of the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship series. After a tough battle through the pack, Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb locked down second place inside a packed Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Southern California. After leading several laps late in the race, Team Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton took the third spot on the podium in this historical 50th year of the Supercross championship. In the Western Regional 250SX Class, Team Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence nabbed the opening win with a wire-to-wire victory.

Ricky Brabec Exits The Dakar 2023 Rally

The legendary Dakar Rally-Raid launched out on its annual run over the New Years weekend, and already two frontrunners and podium favorites have crashed out of the race- two time race winner Sam Sunderland of Great Britain, and 2020 Dakar champ Ricky Brabec of the United States. This opens the doors for hard chargers Daniel Sanders of Australia and young Americans Mason Klein and Skyler Howes to make their runs at glory in the harsh lands of the Saudi Arabian peninsula.

Eye Candy: MV Agusta Superveloce 1000 Serie Oro

Now the Italians have upped the ante again, by debuting an all-new Superveloce 1000 Serie Oro. It’s limited edition, so out of reach numerically and economically for most, but who among us doesn’t enjoy gazing and gawking at a rolling piece of exquisite motorcycle art? This Serie Oro build most certainly is that. MV Agusta didn’t even debut it at EICMA, opting to unveil it at a “more intimate” gathering nearby, with company dignitaries and select media present. And of course, Ago himself in attendance.

New Royal Enfield 650 Coming to North America

EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori), or the Milan Motorcycle Shows is an annual trade show in Milan, Italy featuring brands from around the world debuting their next model year motorcycles. The six day event heralds the end of one riding season while showcasing what’s coming in the next. From what we gather there weren’t a great many head-turning reveals, but a few notable exceptions caught our eyes, like the new Suzuki powerplant and bikes we discussed last week. We’ll share a few more interesting unveilings in the days and weeks ahead. We continue with this notable new bike coming from Royal Enfield in 2023.

Suzuki Unveils New Motor, New Motorcycles At EICMA

Suzuki pulled the wraps off a completely new motor this week at the EICMA in Milan, Italy, and introduced the first two bikes that will utilize the mill, the 2023 GSX-8S and V-Strom 800DE. With this completely new mill for the brand, and two bikes it will first appear in, Suzuki seems committed to manufacturing a versatile powerplant that can be put to use in an ever wider array of motorcycles in the future.

Keanu Reeves had a dream- the acclaimed actor has always loved motorcycles, and he envisioned what for him would be the perfect American-made motorcycle, combining classic American cruiser lines with aggressive sport styling and handling. With the help of friend and eventual partner Gard Hollinger, the two set to work on building a motorcycle and custom company that would create and bring to market a motorcycle built to the customer’s specifications and tastes. In 2011, ARCH Motorcycle was born. From their debut ARCH KRGT-1, the now-unveiled ARCH 1s, and the limited-production ARCH Method 143, Keanu, Gard and their team of designers and builders pride themselves on challenging the perception of what an American motorcycle can be, and how they can be built.

Relationships Are Everything

A recent road trip Steve described led us to publish this photo essay, and the story behind it. Steve made the westbound trip with a former student of his, Mike Greenwood, a good friend of Steve’s as well as Mike’s father John, whom interestingly had also been a student of Steve’s back in 1980. A two-generation friendship. Mike’s father passed away two years ago, and Steve has been there for Mike and his family in the years since.
