100 Miles on a Triumph Speed Twin 1200 RS
by Rob Brooks | Feb 13, 2025 | Bikes & Gear | 2 |
Triumph’s quintessential big Bonney is the epitome of classic Brit bike style, yet utilizing all the modern tech we’ve come to expect in our motorbikes- EFI, ABS, adjustable suspension, various ride modes, etc. The Street Twin 1200 rolls with upright ergos, solid shifting and braking, light and responsive handling, and that nostalgic Triumph vibe one can only experience on a Bonneville. I’m biased admittedly, owning a 2017 Bonney 900 myself, and having grown up around them with my Triumph-riding father back many moons ago. I love these motorcycles.

Sometimes, a motorcycle ride is not only enjoyable but therapeutic, even deeply soul satisfying. Such was the ride I took by myself on January 1, 2023, New Years Day. The perfect way to bid farewell to 2022, and welcome 2023. I needed it.

Triumph has a long illustrious history in motorcycling, however rocky their journey has been at times. From their initial launch back in 1902, the iconic motorcycle company has grown into a world leader in the field, weathered financial storms, and has emerged stronger than ever. They now prepare to celebrate two milestones- 120 years of manufacturing world-class motorcycles, and rolling out their one millionth machine since reorganizing and relaunching in 1990. The one-off, special edition Tiger 900 Rally Pro was unveiled at Triumph’s global headquarters in Hinckley, England by the company’s CEO, Nick Bloor, in the presence of the entire UK team. The choice of the Tiger 900 Rally Pro was the ideal bike to receive the honor, being such a versatile, all-terrain, do-everything motorcycle, truly representative of the brand’s history and capabilities.

A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to wrench on an older bike, a 1969 Triumph T100. An acquaintance had asked if I could help him get it running again. He had told me the bike would kick over after some tickling and kicking (it’s still a full kick-start), but not stay running more than about 30-40 seconds. Conceding that I am no master mechanic, yet interested in seeing if I could bring it back to good health, I agreed to take a shot at it…

There is a group of motorcyclists in our area, known as the Night Riders, who enjoy carving up the country roads outside of town after sunset. I hear them many warm, spring-summer evenings, their sport bikes howling through the dark, engines revving, clicking up and down through the gears as they slice their way along the curvy blacktop that snakes around our north Georgia home. Sometimes I just stand outside and listen, trying to count how many there are, guessing which roads they are running- and occasionally, wishing I were riding with them.
