Still in the thick of the Covid pandemic last year, the motorcycle industry nonetheless had another banner year, posting positive sales numbers by 2021 year-end. In the US of A alone, motorcycle sales across all categories were up by 21.8% since 2019, with even scooter sales up by 19.6%. Dual-sport and ADV sales skyrocketed, up 18.6% over 2020, which itself was up a whopping 46.2% over 2019, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. People followed the “social distancing” mandates by hopping on motorcycles and rolling out into the wide world of fresh air and open spaces.

A Road Dirt reader messaged me over the weekend, asking, “What bikes do you guys hope to be able to ride this year?” I thought that to be a fine question, so I put it to several the Road Dirt fellas, asking them what bikes they’d really like to sample this year. I got some expected answers from a couple of them, as I know their tastes pretty well, but a few others surprised me. So I thought I’d share their faves with you. The list isn’t exhaustive, as each gave me more than one, but I decided to publish their top hopefuls for 2022, to invite discussion and dialogue among our readers. We at Road Dirt saw incredible growth across the 2021 year and with it, a widening circle of relationships with motorcycle manufacturers. We’ve had the opportunity to sample quite a variety of bikes this year, and frankly, we loved them all. So when we kicked around the idea of sharing our “Top 5 Faves” for the past 12 months, we honestly had a tough time selecting them. We found much to love in each one we got to throw a leg over. Unlike the days of old, when brands would occasionally “lay an egg” with a debut model, motorcycles today are state-of-the-art, high-tech, very well-built machines from manufacturers who take form and function seriously. No lemons here.
