Ever since we enjoyed the opportunity to throttle around on Royal Enfield’s Himalayan a couple of years ago, we believed they had a winner in the diminutive but highly capable and supremely affordable ADV bike. Turns out we were right, as the Himi has been a runaway best seller for the legendary motorcycle brand the world over these past few years. So its not surprising the world’s oldest continually-in-production motorbike company would begin to offer variations on the venerable Himalayan platform, now evidenced in the sporty looking Scram 411 coming this fall.

September in the Pacific Northwest is Gods gift to motorcyclists. Cool air descends from Cascade Mountain crests chilling the warm valley floor like God’s own air conditioning, as select leaves turn colors, giving a preview of the fall to come. Crisp water from the appropriately named Icicle River dribbled to our left, foaming over smooth boulders as we rode.
So I celebrated the priceless moment by goosing the throttle, letting the rear step out in a slow, steady dirt drift while ahead of me Donni Reddington did the same, only in a much better way since she coaches dirt riders for a living at Skool Of Moto. If you asked either of us we would tell you, life will never get better than this, or more strange. I never thought I would be doing this on a Harley. But is it really that surprising?

Tuesday began with packing, cleaning up the beautiful Prairie Rose, fueling, then rolling out in the direction of Fossil and Antelope, two big goals for the day. Heading west on State 26, we rode through the canyons and high hill country of Malheur National Forest, breathtaking country. Truly reminded me of the landscapes in so many old westerns I watched in my youth.
