Phil & Rob’s Excellent H-D Touring Adventure
by Phil Gauthier | Mar 15, 2024 | Bikes & Gear | 5 |
A couple of months ago Rob rang me up (that means phone call for you youngsters) to ask if I would like to ride to Daytona Beach Bike Week and give the new 2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide and Street Glide a go, compliments of the H-D Marketing team. He went on about having a place to stay with his old high school buddy for free or some such drivel – not sure. As an official H-D Fan Boy, I couldn’t focus after I heard “new Road Glide and Street Glide”. Following a slight bump in my schedule we had to push our departure one day which cut our demo ride down a bit but I was still down to see what all the fuss was about with these new baggers.

I must confess upfront – in all my years of motorcycle riding, with all of the races, rides, regional rallies, etc., I have never personally attended Daytona Beach Bike Week. I’ve just never been a big fan of crowded rallies. The last large “bike week” I attended was in 1999, a rain-soaked Myrtle Beach Bike Week. This 2023 Honda Monkey is currently my ninth registered and running motorcycle and if I could sum this bike up in one word, it would simply be “FUN”. The Monkey takes me back to the days of my youth! Styled after the old Honda Mini Trail 50 and early 60s Monkey from back in the day, the new Monkey is thoroughly modern and built for grown-up riding. The seat height is 30.5 inches, which I understand is 3 inches taller than Honda’s Rebel 1100 that Rob and Phil rode and reviewed. And what a comfortable seat! My bony butt never gets sore, even riding around on it most of the day.

The annual Daytona Beach Bike Week is a great many things to a great many people. From a wide variety of races, to biker parties day and night up and down Main Street, to scenic rides along the beach or through the lush Florida interior, many motorcycle riders consider Daytona Bike Week as the official kick-off of riding season. Hundreds of thousands make the “pilgrimage” from across the continent and even from around the world to experience the spectacle and join in the festivities.

Ah, the wonder of Daytona Beach Bike Week… The first major event on the motorcycle industry calendar when all the manufactures come together to present their new models to the riding public. It is also a great time for moto-journalists to test ride bikes launched for the upcoming riding season, and this year we had not one but two opportunities to test some of the hottest new bikes launched. Little did I know I would be riding one of the newest baggers that – surprisingly – makes you feel like popping a wheelie as soon as you roll on the throttle in pretty much any gear.
