Turning right onto a state road near my home, I suddenly caught a glimpse in my left periphery of a pickup truck topping the hill behind me, his headlights bearing down rapidly in my mirrors. “Oh crap,” I exclaimed, as I rolled hard on the throttle to put distance between us. The Zero DSR/X responded instantly with arm stretching torque, nearly lifting the front with eager acceleration. 0-70 mph in seconds, leaving the four wheeled interloper far behind.

I remember the Moto Morini motorcycles back in my youth. I never knew anybody who actually owned one, but I frequently beheld them in motorcycle magazines of the time. In my mind, Morinis ranked right up there in beauty, quality, desirability, and price of course, with the likes of Italian counterparts Ducati, MV Agusta, Moto Guzzi and Cagiva, to name a few. Suzuki pulled the wraps off a completely new motor this week at the EICMA in Milan, Italy, and introduced the first two bikes that will utilize the mill, the 2023 GSX-8S and V-Strom 800DE. With this completely new mill for the brand, and two bikes it will first appear in, Suzuki seems committed to manufacturing a versatile powerplant that can be put to use in an ever wider array of motorcycles in the future.

Ever since we enjoyed the opportunity to throttle around on Royal Enfield’s Himalayan a couple of years ago, we believed they had a winner in the diminutive but highly capable and supremely affordable ADV bike. Turns out we were right, as the Himi has been a runaway best seller for the legendary motorcycle brand the world over these past few years. So its not surprising the world’s oldest continually-in-production motorbike company would begin to offer variations on the venerable Himalayan platform, now evidenced in the sporty looking Scram 411 coming this fall.

I am ascending into a low cloud bank outside Hiawassee, Georgia, and visibility is limited to about 30 yards in front of me. I’m on GA 75, a twisting, curvy state road winding its way across the mountains, and rain has been pelting me since pulling out of town. My pace is slowed, both the windshield and Transitions face shield on my Bell Qualifier helmet are covered in dancing water droplets, and I’m intently peering through the fog, throttling this 2022 Yamaha Ténéré 700 cautiously across the soaked road surface.
