The world’s largest motorcycle advocacy organization celebrates an historic milestone

Some 25 years ago, I received a membership invitation packet in the mail from the American Motorcyclist Association. I had heard of the AMA, mainly through their sanctioning of various forms of motorcycle racing. Yet up until that packet, I was largely unfamiliar with the organization’s larger motorcycling advocacy mission. So I read up, then joined up, getting my membership card, a few car stickers, and their monthly magazine, American Motorcyclist. My membership has lapsed a few times, needing renewal, but largely, I’ve been an AMA member for many if not most of the subsequent years. I’ve got the membership pins to prove it. I’ve even written for their magazine a few times, before launching Road Dirt back in 2019.

The AMA is a great organization.

The American Motorcyclist Association has been celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, and reflecting on their rich history of standing up for the rights and opportunities of motorcycle riders nationwide, at the local, state and federal levels. The AMA has received numerous special recognitions from the local government in Pinkerington, Ohio where their headquarters are located, by the state legislature of Ohio (pictured above), and by the United States Congress. The AMA is the largest motorcycle rights organization in the world, and has inspired the founding and growth of similar organizations for motorcycle riders in other countries across the globe.

“For the past century, the American Motorcyclist Association has brought together hundreds of thousands of like-minded riders with a shared love of motorcycling,” AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman recently reflected. “As we celebrated our 100th anniversary in 2024, we reflected on our journey as one of the largest motorcycling membership organizations in the world and the impact the organization has had on the motorcycle industry and its enthusiasts. We take great pride in our mission to protect motorcycling and promote the motorcycle lifestyle, and we will continue to do so for the next 100 years!”

Founded in 1924, the AMA is a nonprofit, membership-based association whose mission is to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycle riding. The AMA advocates for motorcycle riders’ interests at all levels of government, and sanctions thousands of competition and recreational events across the country every year. From AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, to their annual inductions at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, not to mention their sponsorship of AMA Supercross, flat track and road racing events, the AMA is all over the map of American motorcycling, quite literally. For both on and off-road riding, there is not a better organization standing up for our riding rights than the American Motorcyclist Association, in our humble opinion.
