Sneak Peek: Indian Scout Gets A Makeover
by Road Dirt Crew | Apr 3, 2024 | Bikes & Gear | 0 |
“America’s First Motorcycle Company” introduced this week the next evolution of their iconic Indian Scout. The lineup builds on its rich history with five completely redesigned models, three trim levels, and more than 100 Scout family accessories and farkles for customization and personalization. We got a sneak peek on Tuesday, and already eagerly anticipate the opportunity to take any/all of these for a spin, hopefully an extended one (or two).

The first time I threw a leg over the 2023 Indian Scout Rogue and sat on the bike, gripped those 10” mini-ape bars and thumbed it to life, I’m not exaggerating when I say that the opening guitar riff of George Thorogood’s “Bad To The Bone” started playing in my head. The bar reach, the vibration, the low rumble of the twin exhaust, the somewhat forward footpegs, and the matte blacked-out everything save the chrome pipes just elicits a hooligan cruiser vibe. My voice dropped an octave and gained some gravel when riding the Rogue.

The day’s sub-freezing temperature was something I had honestly been waiting for. Prior to my cancer diagnosis, I have ridden in colder temps as have most of my motorcycle riding friends and family (i.e. our son Ryan who lives in Alaska). This day’s ride was a short-term goal that I had set for myself since it has been several years since I had ridden in conditions this cold. With God’s presence, provisions, and protection, I set about reaching this new goal. In a below-freezing morning temp of 27 degrees, 19 including the wind chill, I suited up, warmed the Scout, pulled on my full-face modular helmet, and set out in the frigid yet sunny morning air. I’ve never used or owned electric heated riding gear, so I had heavily layered up for the short hop to the House. Layers of thermals top and bottom, a balaclava underneath the helmet to ensure my face wouldn’t get frostbitten, it nearly took me longer to prepare for the ride than to actually make it.

We at Road Dirt have always been fans of Indian Motorcycle’s Scout line since they re-introduced it a few years back. Long, low and lean, we were impressed from our first sampling of one when Placa throttled a Scout Bobber around Los Angeles for a month. Approachable and affordable for a wide range of motorcycle riders, the Indian Scout line has become among the brand’s most popular sellers in recent years. My friend Mike, a veteran motorcycle rider and retired motor police officer, traded his Harley tourer for a Scout and rode it around the south central Texas hill country last fall.

My friend Mike Hinton is a fighter and a survivor. A retired career uniform police officer, a loving husband and father of three, and in recent years a jovial grandfather, Mike has faced many challenges in his life, each making him stronger and more resilient. A man of deep faith, with a great love of family, friends and travel, Mike knows the value of shared experiences with people you care deeply about. Currently battling an aggressive cancer, Mike has accepted the challenge and like every other occasion in his life, has endeavored to navigate it with faith, courage and resolve. An avid motorcyclist since his teen years, Mike has chronicled some amazing adventures in his life, and I’ve been privileged to share some of those with him. In his own words, “As young men, we seek out challenges in our lives then savor the victory of the conquered challenge. As we get older, we may still seek out challenges that fit our age and health, but the memories that we look back on and those that we still are creating are now more important than the challenges and their victories.”
