Some semi-poetic musings on the therapy of motorcycle riding

I’m no poet, but while seated in an aircraft at 35,000 feet somewhere over the Arabian Sea west of India, these words began to materialize in my head. Returning from a 16-day mission/relief trip to Indonesia with 127 Legacy Foundation, I longed to unwind on a motorcycle and ride off into uncrowded countryside. Through travel exhaustion, overseas illness, and jet-lag, I mused, “I’m always better on a bike.” Hence, the following-

I’m Better On A Bike

When the day has been long,
And the night has been restless,
All I need is an afternoon ride;
I’m better on a bike.

When I’m feeling my age,
And my health seems to falter,
All I need is to fire up and throttle out;
I’m better on a bike.

When my confidence wavers,
And I feel unsure of myself
In other tasks and duties of my life;
I’m better on a bike.

When my hands begin to hurt
And my gut aches with illness,
A ride on my Triumph refreshes and resets;
I’m better on a bike.

When the pressures of life mount,
And the demands are relentless;
I reach for the keys and the gloves;
I’m better on a bike.

When this broken, messed up world
Makes my heart heavy,
I point the Bonneville down the road;
I’m better on a bike.

When my head is full of questions,
And my mind is filled with why’s,
I pull on the helmet and gloves;
I’m better on a bike.

When modern tech frustrates me,
And I feel like a cog in the machine,
I kick start the old KZ650;
I’m better on a bike.

When I feel like I don’t measure up,
And that I’m inconsequential,
I lean into the next curve;
I’m better on a bike.

When the future looks uncertain,
And the present is shifting sand,
I roll toward the gathering dusk;
I’m better on a bike.

No matter my age or my health,
The times or the seasons,
No matter how or where the wind blows,

I’m better on a bike.

    Totally agreed! Good on you for serving faithfully. I’ll be going to Mexico on a missions trip in September.

    I’d like to hook-up with you for a ride sometime since I’m not that far away here in west Forsyth Co. Shoot me an email if you’re up for it sometime!
