Motorcycle Gear: Of Leather and Lid

There is an old saying that gentlemen bikers can never have too many leather jackets. There are so many occasions to be prepared for when only the appropriate coat will do. So a diverse closet of casual, work, play and formal biker-wear is required. Of course, you need wet, cold, hot and the-weather-in-between seasonal gear, as well as the occasional need for, of course, Old West fringe or ski slope chic.

2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: Road and Dirt

Ripping down Utah State 40 through the vast and beautiful Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, our motorcycle entourage suddenly arrived at our dirt turn-off. Pulling over before descending into the deep and somewhat narrow canyon, our Royal Enfield group leader gave us a few pointers about the route they’d scouted the day before, then down we rode into the ravine. The ride on 40 had been glorious, over the hills and around the lakes in this portion of northeast Utah. The warning signs at the beginning of the off-road section of our ride alarmed me, however. “Travel At Your Own Risk”, “Dangerous Road Ahead”, among others had me wondering why I was here. I’m primarily a street rider, and I feared this segment might take me way out of my wheelhouse and skill level.

MZ’s Moto Memories: Honda CB1100

I’m 66 as I write this, and I got my first real motorcycle on my 13th birthday. I’ve been riding ever since. I’ve owned as many as 20 motorcycles at a time. It’s definitely in my blood. Yet for all the bikes I’ve had the pleasure of owning and riding over the years and miles, one of them stands out as being a favorite to actually ride.
That would be my 2013 Honda CB1100.

2024 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide Revival

The 2024 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide Revival is right out of America’s Golden Age of Design, the Space Age thrust into artful forms of innovation and style. The Revival is an homage to the original 1956 Hydra-Glide (1949-’57), which introduced hydraulic front forks. It’s the fourth iteration in the Motor Company’s limited and numbered Icons collection, its factory version of a resto-mod. Earlier Icons included the 2023 Electra Glide Highway King, 2022 Low Rider Diablo and 2021 Electra Glide Revival. Modern performance wrapped in vintage looks can be an irresistible combination. I hope H-D continues bringing back its style heroes. Maybe a 1959 Sportster would be nice, or a ’36 Knucklehead.

ADV Racing at Sturgis TT

So it’s not surprising that another new category has been introduced, this time in American Flat Track. The category, called AdventureTrackers, made its inaugural debut at Sturgis, SD recently with its first race conducted on a road/dirt course of the Sturgis TT.
Not only was it a successful race, but it appears a new rivalry has emerged as a result, between Harley-Davidson teams racing the Pan America 1250, and teams running Triumph’s Tiger 1200 GT and Rally Pro bikes. A Honda Africa Twin team ran as well, and some big-name racers piloted these ADV bikes in the race. It appears the trial run of the class was a crowd pleaser as well, with lots of social media buzz about the race from Sturgis attendees on hand for it.

2024 Motorcycle Sport Touring Tires Shootout: Final Results

We test tires because you just never know.  Bikes are different, riders are different, seasons are different and as we are finding out, tires are different.  Much, much different.  We test tires by attempting to control for everything- riding the same bikes, at the same time, with the same riders and same fuel loads following each other all season.  We even order the same coffee, all in the name of accuracy.  Sometimes the results are predictable and other times, as in this test, the results are shocking.

Neale Bayly Rides: Grand Plans, Harsh Realities

Riding my 1973 Honda SL125 onto the ferry back to mainland England from the Island of Jersey with the hangover from hades, just seven days after arriving, the prophetic words of the not-so-friendly policeman we had met were ringing embarrassingly true. Accompanied by my Nit Wit Mate Wibbly, on a slightly newer Honda XL125, our only mission now was figuring out how we could sneak back into town unnoticed: Especially after the fanfare of the local newspaper announcing our “round-the-world” motorcycle trip just two weeks earlier.
