Wayne Rainey Rides Again

Our respect and admiration for Wayne Rainey went through the roof over this past weekend when we learned of his amazing feat at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, held yearly in Sussex, England. The three time 500cc Grand Prix world champion (1990-92) was reunited with his 1992 championship-winning YZR500, and in fact rode the historic machine multiple times around the famed Goodwood course over the festival weekend.

Riding Your First Track Day

Recently I was at The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington for a motorcycle track day.  Since it was a Tuesday, turnout was light leaving lots of open track.  The sun was shining, temperature was in the mid-60s and a slight breeze was blowing, a perfect day.  In nine days MotoAmerica would be here turning and burning on the same surface.
If you’ve have ever had ideas of doing a track day, this is for you.

Road Tripping a 2022 Yamaha Ténéré 700

I am ascending into a low cloud bank outside Hiawassee, Georgia, and visibility is limited to about 30 yards in front of me. I’m on GA 75, a twisting, curvy state road winding its way across the mountains, and rain has been pelting me since pulling out of town. My pace is slowed, both the windshield and Transitions face shield on my Bell Qualifier helmet are covered in dancing water droplets, and I’m intently peering through the fog, throttling this 2022 Yamaha Ténéré 700 cautiously across the soaked road surface.

DGR 2022 Breaks Records

We’ve long held a special place in our hearts for the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. This worldwide benefit ride for men’s prostate cancer and mental health strikes close to home for several of us here at Road Dirt who have dealt with cancer and/or various forms of depression, either personally or with a loved one. So after two years of social distancing and solo riding, we were thrilled to see the event returning to its original form of riders across globe gathering together to ride for the cause in their “dapper best” astride vintage, classic and modern classic motorcycles.

Dunlop-Pirelli Tires Dry Handling Shootout

Dunlop sent Road Dirt a set of their new RoadSmart IV sport touring tires to compete with Pirelli’s sport touring offering, the Angel GT in a sport touring tire shootout.  Road Dirt guest tester, my riding buddy and hard core tourer Dave Wensveen was roped into this test because he and I have identical 5th generation Honda VFR800s, perfect testing beds for sport touring rubber.  My bike runs with the new set of Dunlop RoadSmart IVs while Dave rides with the Pirelli Angel GT.  For our (mostly) dry handling test, we headed south to the Columbia River Gorge and the Rowena Curves.

Wet and Wild in Wisconsin

MotoAmerica rolled into the famed 4-mile racetrack known as Road America in Elkhart Lake over the weekend, with a full slate of exciting races across seven(!) classes on Saturday and Sunday. What ensued would be counted among the fiercest competition of the season thus far. But nothing could hold a candle to what went down in the Medallia Superbike class both days

Dual Sport and Adventure Motorcycles

A reader emailed us recently with the question, “What do you see as the major differences between dual sport bikes and adventure bikes?” We thought that to be a worthy inquiry, so we will share our observations here. The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC.org) lumps both together in a category they call “dual-purpose” in regards to overall motorcycle sales, but are they really quite different motorbike types? Both are road-ready and dirt-worthy, so why not classify them together?
